Apart from walking into a pharmacy and asking a Pharmacist, current methods for identifying prescription medications involve using various prescription medication recognition portals such as PillBox (https://pillbox.nlm.nih.gov/pillimage/search.php),  WebMD Pill Identifier (https://www.webmd.com/pill-identification/default.htm) and others provided by chain pharmacies such as CVS Health, Walgreens or Rite Aid. They all use drop down menus where the user must manually input in the pill characteristics, none of the current methods have the ability to utilize an image to identify medication.  PillView is working on creating a pharmacist curated worldwide database of prescription images and using AI techniques so that images can be used to automate medication reconciliation, introduce a second pair of eyes in dispensing automation and help the visually impaired and elderly become more self reliant. Pillview.com has a white paper that can be downloaded.
