When the vaccine scandal broke out in China this summer, citizens resorted to blockchain technology in the spreading of related news, to escape the central government’s censorship. It’s ironic as President Xi Jingping had endorsed the same technology at the annual conference of Chinese Academy of Sciences in May, for its breakthrough in several areas including life sciences, gene editing and regenerative medicine etc.
The saga may be a prelude for China to witness the power of Blockchain in medicine. In August, Ant Financial (former Alipay, an affiliate of the Chinese Alibaba Group) has been discreetly experimenting blockchain electronic medical bills, within two weeks, close to 600,000 medical bills were sent out. The company believes blockchain technology permits a ledger of trackable billing records, which are non-reversible and eventually eliminate repeated reimbursement.
A month later, Ant Financial and Shanghai’s Huashan hospital introduced the first blockchain powered prescription service in China. From prescribing, dispensing to delivery and collection, patients are guaranteed of a monitored process and are not afraid of any possible tampering or violating of privacy. The service is presently trailing out at the department of endocrinology, but Huashan hospital believed once it succeed, the service will be adopted hospital-wide.
