The average rural population visiting primary healthcare centers has increased over the years 32884 as of 2016 while the norm is 20000-30000. In addition to primary check, AI and IoT could help doctors perform early diagnosis on other relevant disease states like breast cancer.

If we were to even look at simple capability additions to health workers like the “just in time result on cardiac health” or the “just in time result on the breast cancer status of women”, we could possibly avert several million deaths and equally large number of morbidities.

A study on Breast Cancer in India revealed stunning statistics around the “discovery-diagnosis” of the disease and its prognosis. Almost close to 70% of women were detected at an advanced stage of Cancer. This has an adverse impact on both survival rates and cost. A stage 3 or 4 cancer has a 5-year survival rate of 25% versus a cancer if detected as early as stage 0 is known to have a survival rate of almost near 100% (98.6% to be specific). Furthermore, the cost of treating a cancer at stage 4 is 10-16 times higher than the cost of treating the same cancer at stage 0.

Two prominent startups in the area of breast cancer, UE Lifesciences and Niramai are harnessing AI on the digital front for an accurate diagnosis of cancer. The latter heavily focuses on outreach, effective screening and early non-invasive diagnosis using thermo-radiation. As Niramai accurately describes, the core technology of their solution is an artificial intelligence led diagnostic platform that uses patented thermal image processing and machine learning algorithms for reliable and accurate breast cancer screening”

Likewise, Sigtuple has captured the attention of the Indian healthcare market because of the remarkable potential they have to create an impact on population health. This is a combination of advancements in AI, robotics and cloud computing twined to making basic screening affordable, accessible and accurate.  From recent reports, Sigtuple is currently working to develop digital solutions in areas of ophthalmology and pathology, where samples are pushed on cloud and AI models analyze and generate reports.

It is important to have solutions that focus on solving key visible challenges of today across the continuum of care.
