Dr. Kane: “I think we’ll have to form very smart public-private partnerships, I’ve seen a few examples of them.

“We’re doing that with some academic research partners in the states, where it seems to be easier, certainly for them to collate and curate data.

Panel: What is the easiest way to get the public on board with this?

Dr. Kane: “I think the public are on board. I think they’re on board for solutions to problems that are real, and we should just solve the problems that are real.

“We should go and ask people what their problems are and keep our eyes on them and what they need.

“That’s going to happen through lots of small research projects.

“The mark of great research is you ask a lot of questions, whittle the problem down and you get something that you didn’t expect. I think we’re going to see that.

“NHS digital have done a lot of polling and they find that the public appetite for risk often far outweighs the appetite that we clinicians have in how we approach innovation, how we open data sets, how we communicate them.

“I think the public would actually like to see progress be a bit quicker.”
