“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.”

Charles Darwin

This book, You and AI by Rajeev Ronanki, is actually about artificial intelligence and healthcare but you would not know it unless you read the diminutive subtitle: A Citizen’s Guide to AI, Blockchain, and Puzzling Together the Future of Healthcare. The author has a background in mechanical engineering and computer science as well as healthcare, and this constellation of domain expertise provides a near unique perspective of the future of AI and other technologies in healthcare. Several chapters are particularly good at elucidating the issues, such as chapter 3 on the imbroglio of healthcare and chapter 5 on ethics of artificial intelligence, while a few chapters on the basic aspects of technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain are perhaps too basic for some readers.

One major criticism is that the book is somewhat asymmetrically focused on blockchain compared to artificial intelligence when the proportion of impact of the latter is much broader. Another criticism is that while the book is relatable and realistic about healthcare and its many deficiencies for the average reader, it is relatively light on substance and insights especially for the tech savvy healthcare worker and leader. Lastly, for a book with a focus on technological advances, there are no figures to complement the written material. This book, nevertheless, is worth the read for most stakeholders interested in healthcare and future exponential technologies, especially artificial intelligence and blockchain.
