Leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technology to maximize efficiency leads to more effective healthcare. I attended key healthcare industry event Hlth in November 2022 and spoke to some cutting-edge organizations that are using AI to help drive innovation in the industry.

Communication tools

Every hospital runs on effective communication. But when staff members are overwhelmed, communication can slip, and levels of efficiency rapidly decrease. To support the communication between doctors and patients, Soul Machines uses natural language processing (NLP) to offer a digital workforce that can answer patients questions and Kore AI has an intelligent solution that delivers a human-like conversational experience through voice and digital interactions to help more patients, more of the time, for less cost.

Tailoring AI software to a physician’s specialties ensures they get more time to communicate with their patients, and Egor Kobelev, VP of Healthcare Technology at DataArt commented “the movement towards value-based care is the future of the industry and gives us a chance to move from sick care to healthcare.”

Triage

AI can reduce the burden on healthcare systems by signposting people to appropriate services. Infermedica develops AI solutions for preliminary medical diagnosis and triage to guide every patient to the right care. Amy Window, VP of Technology Partnerships said, “the pandemic has increased the need for patient routing. Getting patients to the right point of care matters, but also cuts down on appointment wait times and avoids overcrowding in the ER, saving patients and payers money.”

Automation

Easing the workload of healthcare professionals by automating repetitive tasks also saves costs associated with administration. Cavo Health utilizes AI to identify medical codes that are linked to specific clinical diagnoses to ensure that payers and providers are getting proper reimbursement and Brevi Technologies accomplish one of the most time consuming tasks by using AI to automatically analyze physician-patient dialogue and scribe consultation narrative notes. MDI Health adopts AI to autonomously optimize treatment. Ariel Efergan, Head of Growth says “medication related issues is the 4th leading cause of death in the world. We use AI to identify high risk patients for specific adverse drug events and give them clinical recommendations to prevent risks occurring.”

AI technology can also offer support by compiling recent and relevant medical information from academic sources. DocNexus uses a knowledge graph database and NLP pipeline to derive valuable insights and identify key opinion leaders from millions of publications, clinical trials and social media for medical professionals to use.

Remote care

Shifting part of the care of chronic cases from face to face to home can relieve pressure on clinical staff and offer convenience to patients. Wizecare Technology is disrupting home physical therapy care with AI analysis and communication capabilities and Sweetch is using AI to engage patients with chronic conditions, with hyper-personalized recommendations throughout every step of their unique health journey.

Outside of the hospital setting, ANDHealth’s mission is to assist efficiency by building a world-leading, integrated ecosystem for the development, commercialization and implementation of evidence-based digital health technologies in Australia and McKinsey & Company are a global management consulting company who work with private and public healthcare leaders to identify innovative ways to tackle today’s biggest healthcare challenges.

AI technology serves as an extension of the clinical team, augmenting the capabilities of experts and leading to positive patient outcomes. By implementing AI tools, staff are relieved of time-intensive tasks and more focus is placed on the highest value priorities. AI applied to health care is driving change for the better.

This fascinating topic of AI tools and their deployment in healthcare, along with others will be discussed at the annual AIMed Global Summit, scheduled for June 4-7 2023 in San Diego. Book your place now!
