Thierry Mesana, MD, PhD
President and CEO

Dr. Mesana is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) since 2014. He received his medical degree in France, where he trained in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. He also received his PhD in biophysics and biomechanics after his original work on artificial heart and ventricular assist devices. He became Full Professor at 36 years old, then Chair of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at La Timone University Hospital, the largest hospital in Marseilles. In 2001, Dr. Mesana was recruited in Canada, as Chairman of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Under his leadership, the Institute’s surgical program and particularly the valve repair program expanded dramatically to become recognized as one of the best in the world. His emphasis on repairing failing heart valves helped to establish this approach as a gold standard for treatment. He has been invited nationally and internationally to present his unique experience in reconstructive mitral valve surgery. Dr Mesana has published more than 350 scientific papers, from mitral valve repair techniques and outcomes to artificial heart technologies, regenerative cardiac cell therapies to coronary bypass and artificial valves durability, and refining surgical treatment and guidelines. He was further appointed as the CEO of UOHI, being then at the head of the largest Heart Institute in Canada, employing 1500 employees and managing a $250 million budget dedicated to treatment, prevention and research for cardiovascular diseases. His vision clearly contributed to transforming the UOHI into a world-class cardiac center in Canada, expanding its influence in other countries like in China where a partner cardiac program has been recently inaugurated in Qingdao, as the Qingdao-Ottawa Heart Institute.
